Heatwave Hits, Animal Care of Oradell Opens, Wine Festival Top the Week in News

The topic on everyone's tongues this week was "the heat." Streets and playgrounds were empty with people looking for ways to stay cool. Both Oradell and the County opened cooling stations to give people without air conditioning some relief. Here's a look at some of the top stories from the week. 

New Animal Hospital Opens in Oradell

Christian Hurst, veterinarian and owner of Animal Care of Oradell, describes his new business as "a hospital with a heart." From the portraits of rescue dogs on the wall, to the resident house dog, Roxie--a dog rescued by Hurst--lying comfortably on the floor behind the front desk, this space has been designed to make the experience of visiting the vet as stressless as possible for animals. 

River Edge Firefighters Provide Campers with Relief from the Heat

With the heat index at 110 degrees Friday, the River Edge Fire Dpt. surprised the campers at Memorial Park when they arrived with their firetruck and turned the hoses on. Water sprayed from above and kids got a chance to play and cool off. 
According to Chief John Mauthe, everyone had a great time. 

New Milford Resident Takes On Expert Testimony in United Water Hearings

Focusing on flooding, traffic and design, New Milford resident, former councilman and licensed architect, Michael Gadaleta, appeared before the New Milford Zoning Board Thursday evening to refute the testimony given by Hekemian's experts over the course of the last 17 months regarding the proposed development of the 13-acre United Water property. 

Wine Festival Coming to Historic New Bridge Landing

The Bergen County Historical Society is hosting a wine festival at New Bridge Landing on Saturday, Aug. 24 from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Seven New Jersey wineries will be participating in the festival and offering tastings of their wine. Those wineries are: Cava Winery, Ventimiglia Vineyard, Four Sisters Winery, Unionville Vineyards, Old York Cellars, Westfall Winery and Amalthea Cellars. All proceeds to benefit building a Bergen County Historical Society Museum and Library. 

Oradell Public Library Offers Museum Pass Loan Program

Thanks to a new Museum Pass Loan Program operated by the Oradell Public Library and sponsored by the Friends of the Oradell Library, Oradell residents can “check out” passes or tickets to many of the area’s most distinguished museums and cultural institutions, including the American Museum of Natural History; the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum; the Montclair Art Museum; and Storm King Art Center.

Bergen County Players to Hold Open Auditions for 'Aladdin'

The Bergen County Players (BCP) of Oradell, one of America's foremost theater groups, will hold open auditions for the magical, mystical, musical Aladdin, to be directed by Lynne Lupfer. Auditions will take place on on August 6 and 8 at the Little Firehouse Theatre, 298 Kinderkamack Road in Oradell.
