Flash Flood Watch Continues for Bergen County

The National Weather Service has extended the flood watch and warning through 1 a.m. Saturday

The National Weather Services has once again extended the flash flood watch issued for Bergen County and surrounding areas. The watch continues through 1 a.m. Saturday with more rain and potentially heavy downpours looming in the forecast. 

"Heavy showers and scattered thunderstorms will continue to develop and move northeast across the region," according to the NWS. "Although most small rivers and streams have receded below their flood stages they are still near bankfull."

The NWS said thunderstorms that do form later this afternoon into the evening will be capable of producing one to two inches of rain per hour.

The Hackensack River at New Milford is currently at 3.87 feet, according to measurements taken by the US Geological Service at 10:15 a.m. Friday which is still well below flood stage. 

Upstream, the Hackensack River at River Vale was still above its flood stage of five feet, measuring 6.56 feet at 10:15 a.m. Friday. The National Weather Service said it expected the river at River Vale to remain above flood stage through the early afternoon on Friday.

This Afternoon: Periods of drizzle before 2pm, then showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly after 5pm. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds and heavy rain. Patchy fog before 2pm. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a high near 78. Southeast wind around 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

Tonight: Showers and thunderstorms likely before midnight, then a chance of showers. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds and heavy rain. Patchy fog after midnight. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a low around 65. East wind around 5 mph becoming calm. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. 

Saturday: A slight chance of showers, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 11am. Patchy fog before 11am. Otherwise, partly sunny, with a high near 83. Calm wind becoming south between 4 and 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Saturday Night: A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms before midnight. Partly cloudy, with a low around 61. West wind between 3 and 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 82. Northwest wind between 5 and 9 mph. 

Sunday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 61.
