Historical Society Marks Mid-Winter Celebrations at New Bridge

The Bergen County Historical Society held celebrated Brigit's Day and Candlemas over the weekend with an Irish harp concert and candle making demonstrations

Winter has reached a mid-point and to celebrate, the Bergen County Historical Society celebrated the occassion with an Irish concert for Brigit's Day and candle making demonstrations for Candlemas at New Bridge Landing on Sunday.

The two events, Brigit's Day and Candlemas, annually fall between the winter solstice and spring equinox, when snowdrops, the first flower of spring, make their appearance, signaling nature’s awakening from winter's sleep.

Harpist Ardis Cavin, an adjunct professor at Bergen Community College, performed several Irish ballads on a Celtic harp in the Steuben House. At the same time, visitors were able to create their own custom candles in the Out Kitchen with the help of John Muller of Fort Lee.
