Theresa DeSalvio Presents 'Inside China' Art Exhibit at FDU

Theresa DeSalvio’s  ‘Inside China’ exhibit will be on display at the Edward Williams Gallery on Fairleigh Dickinson University’s Metropolitan Campus from Monday, January 20, to Friday, February 20, 2014.

A reception will be held on Saturday, February 1, from 2 to 4 p.m., with violinist Amelia Muccia and Harpist Kristy Chmura.

DeSalvio began large-scale paintings after visiting Beijing in November 2009. Through reading the information presented at various sites, she discovered that nine is considered the most auspicious number in China, giving her the idea of creating a series of nine large paintings.  As she worked on these paintings over the next two years, she became so involved with her subject that she went on to make a total of 14 paintings followed by a series of Chinese Zodiac paintings.

The work attempts to capture the spirit of the people as China transforms. During her visit, DeSalvio photographed the people as well as important historic architectural sites. “These paintings are based on observation, photographs and imagination as well as the formal concerns of creating a new image. The underlying compulsion is my fascination with people, culture, and tradition.”

The Gallery is in FDU’s Edward Williams Hall, 150 Kotte Place, Hackensack, N.J. Gallery hours are Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., and Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. There is no admission charge. For directions and for more information, call 201-692-2449.
