Ridgewood's Andy Maguire Looks Poised to Take on Scott Garrett

Former Congressman has filed paperwork to run against the Republican incumbent.

It sure seems like former Congressman Andy Maguire is looking to reclaim his old seat. The Democrat from Ridgewood is making the rounds and raising a warchest to take on well-funded, name-brand conservative incumbent, Scott Garrett. While Maguire – who was a congressman from 1974-1980 before Marge Roukema ousted him – claims the campaign is still "exploratory" at this point, his spokesman told northjersey.com that the 5th district seat is "certainly winnable." Maguire, 75, has been at party events in recent months, most recently introducing two Democratic Glen Rock council candidates. Politickernj.com reported he has filed the paperwork to take on Garrett in 2014. While the 5th district still favors Republicans, new voting lines now bring …

These potential candidates had better be prepared to raise funds and campaign organization NOW. Because the county and state Democratic parties have made very clear that they are perfectly willing to let Scott Garrett be Congressman-for-life in their refusal to put any skin in the game.   more ›

Upgrades to Substation Coming this Fall, PSE&G Says

No interruption of service to customers, officials report.

As part of their massive $3.9 billion, 10-year proposed infrastructure plan, called "Energy Strong," PSE&G will be running underground transformer lines from the New Milford substation to the River Edge Swim Club, officials reported at the meeting of the River Edge Mayor and Council Monday evening. The plan, prompted by the effects of Superstorm Sandy that left residents in River Edge, Oradell and New Milford without power and gas for 10 days, includes raising, relocating or protecting all switching and substations affected by recent storms as well as those in newly designated flood zones, moving 20 miles of overhead electric distribution lines underground, reinforcing overhead power lines to withstand sustained 65 mph winds, replacing and…

Oradell Attorney to Push for New Application in Proposed Development, and More This Week

The state of the United Water property application for development will be challenged by Oradell's attorney this week.

Louis Flora, the attorney representing Oradell in the New Milford Zoning Board hearings of the proposed development of the United Water Property, is expected to challenge the application at the special meeting of the Zoning Board on Thursday. This meeting comes on the heels of the dramatic ending of last week's meeting when counsel for the developer announced that they had entered into a conceptual agreement with the New Milford Board of Education to donate three-acres of property, along with a 'sizable' donation, for a 'field of dreams.' Opposing counsel plans to petition the Board to consider this a new application, rather than an amendment to the existing application. Flora said that because the land will now have a different use, …

Yet-to-Open Westwood Hospital Already Has Expansion Aims

HUMC-Pascack Valley CEO Chad Melton wants the hospital to increase bed counts within the next few years, according to northjersey.com. Melton said he doesn't think Bergen competitors will "lose volume" as a result.

With Valley Hospital struggling to modernize its own facilities through a controversial expansion project, a major competitor announced it too has visions of expansion – and it's not even open for business yet. According to a Sunday report on northjersey.com, Hackensack University Medical Center at Pascack Valley is optimistic its new facility will drum up enough business to quickly expand. Pascack Valley Hospital declared bankrupcy in 2007 and has been dormant since. “If we truly have the volume here and the support we think, within the next three years we’ll be looking to add inpatient rooms,” Chad Melton, chief executive of the 128-bed hospital, told the news website. HUMC-Pascack Valley, scheduled to open June 1, is the first for-…

Ground Breaking on Former Huffman Koos Site Tops Local News

Catch up on all of last week's top news stories.

After four years of obtaining approvals and soil remediation, the ground is broken on the former Huffman Koos site. CVS and Total Wine are two known retailers moving in. Acknowledging the efforts of the mayor and council that preceeded him, Mayor Sandy Moscaritolo said that getting to the groundbreaking was "a long hard process."  Proposed budget has Oradell homeowners facing an estimated average annual increase of approximately $497 in their property taxes. Jaws dropped and tensions mounted during Tuesday's meeting of the New Milford Zoning Board at the revelation that the New Milford Board of Education (BOE) had entered into a separate agreement with the developer of the United Water property to receive a parcel of land to build a 'field…

Assemblyman Schroeder Faces Another $300K Lawsuit

A Harrington Park resident claims Robert Schroeder never made payments on three loans from last year.

Another civil lawsuit has been filed against Assemblyman Robert Schroeder of Washington Township. Harrington Park resident Phillip Corvelli alleges in a complaint filed in Hackensack April 30 that he made three loans to Schroeder totaling $245,000 in May and June of 2012. Corvelli is seeking more than $339,000 for the loans, interest and his court costs. The loans were initially due back that July, but the two agreed to extend the deadline to August, according to the complaint. The three checks from Hercules Global Logisitics that Schroeder gave to Corvelli were allegedly all returned for insufficient funds, just weeks after the assemblyman was charged with writing bad checks to a pair of investors. No payments have been made on the loans…

Attorney for Oradell Weighs in on New Milford BOE's Agreement with Hekemian

The revelation that the Board of Education entered into a conceptual agreement with Hekemian for a 'field of dreams' has raised the temperature on the United Water property conversation.

The aftershocks of the revelation that the New Milford Board of Education (BOE) had entered into a separate agreement with the developer of the United Water property to receive a three-acre parcel of land to build a 'field of dreams' have rippled throughout community since Tuesday's meeting of the Zoning Board. Louis Flora, the attorney representing Oradell in the Hekemian hearings, said that a strong legal argument can be made that the amended application is, in actuality, a new application. "I need to see the amended application before I can make any determination," Flora said. "But they have not filed it yet." Flora said that the field offered to the school is a parcel of land now intended for a different use requiring variances, …

Oradell, the New Milford Board of Education just sold you out. The truck traffic is supposed to be routed almost entirely through Oradell. You have the right to attend Zoning Board meetings as objectors. Join us at a special SOD meeting to learn how to fight…   more ›

Legislators Urge NY Governor to Sign Two-state Flood Prevention Measure

Bill would create joint commission to prevent flooding hazards in Bergen and Rockland counties.

Assemblywomen Connie Wagner and Valerie Vainieri Huttle joined with New York state legislators Wednesday to urge New York Governor Andrew Cuomo to sign a bill to help stem the tide of reoccurring flooding in communities in Bergen and Rockland counties.  Those who spoke at the press conference with Lake Tappan as a backdrop stressed the need for a commission that would bring representatives of both states to work together in a collaborative and coordinated effort on flood mitigation and water supply plans. New Jersey already enacted a companion law (A-2440) in 2011 sponsored by Wagner and Vainieri Huttle.  In order to create the bi-state commission both states must enact similar legislation. The fate now rests in Cuomo’s hands with New York…

New Milford BOE Enters into Contract for 'Field of Dreams' with Hekemian

"Conceptual contract" includes Hekemian donation of 3 acres of property and a 'sizable' donation for BOE to construct an athletic stadium.

Jaws dropped and tensions mounted during Tuesday's Zoning Board meeting at the revelation that the New Milford Board of Education (BOE) had entered into a separate agreement with the developer of the United Water property to receive a parcel of land to build a 'field of dreams.'  Attorney for the applicant, Antimo "Andy" DelVecchio, informed the Zoning Board that Hekemian had entered into a "conceptual contract" with the New Milford BOE to donate "in excess" of three acres of property to construct a field of dreams-like "state of the art" athletic field and stadium on a parcel of property that is not subject to flooding. DelVecchio stressed that the developer is not building the athletic stadium, they are only donating the land and a "…

Former Gov. Whitman: Vote For Women, Minorities and Chris Christie

New Jersey's only female governor spoke at the Bergen County Women's Republican Club's 90th anniversary celebration.

Former Gov. Christie Todd Whitman urged attendees at the Bergen County Women's Republican Club's 90th anniversary celebration Wednesday to vote for minorities, women and Gov. Chris Christie.  "We need people with different life experiences, with different ways of thinking, to be at that [decision-making] table," Whitman said during her keynote address at Seasons in Washington Township. Whitman, New Jersey's first and only female governor, said she supported more women and citizens from minority groups running for office and also voiced support for Governor Christie in his run for re-election against Democrat Sen. Barbara Buono.  Whitman pointed to Christie’s willingness to work across party lines. "We really can set the pace for the nation…

Christie Whitman was the worst governor in New Jersey history. She bankrupted the state by making suburban, middle class voters pay for expensive new schools in Democratic strongholds in Newark, Paterson, and Jersey City. Whitman's fiscal recklessness fueled the exodus of middle class voters out of New Jersey, ensuring permanent control of the state by the corrupt Democratic machine.   more ›
