Gov. Christie Praises Westwood Hospital's Reopening

The governor visited HackensackUMC at Pascack Valley, which is set to open June 1.

Gov. Chris Christie visited Westwood Thursday for a ceremonial ribbon-cutting at HackensackUMC at Pascack Valley.  Christie praised the hospital's officials for their work and State Health Commissioner Mary O'Dowd for ultimately approving the hospital last year. HUMC at Pascack Valley was the first hospital to receive a license from New Jersey in almost 30 years. "I'm thrilled that this is happening and we can be part of it together," Christie said. Christie and other officials also credited members of the community for their support in reopening the former Pascack Valley Hospital, which closed in 2007 at the same site. Christie said he gave his support to the new hospital because people in the region needed it. "It's all about the people …

Special Meeting on Hekemian Application Ends Before It Begins

Attorneys for Hekemian request the hearing of the application be carried to June 11.

Editor's note: Oradell has hired attorney Louis Flora to represent the town in the New Milford Zoning Board hearings regarding the proposed development of the United Water property by Hekemian. Thursday's special meeting of the Zoning Board in the matter of the proposed development of the United Water property did not take place as scheduled. Technically, the meeting was not cancelled--at the applicant's request, and with the Board's approval, it was carried to the June 11 regular meeting. As of Thursday's meeting, Hekemian had not yet filed the amendment to the site plan application, nor had he submitted any renderings reflecting the donation of 3.25 acres of land to the New Milford Board of Education. During last week's Zoning Board …

Many of us who grew up in New Jersey have wonderful memories of the Jersey Shore. I was a Bradley Beach and Asbury Park guy who remembers the glory days from the 1960's when Asbury Park had 5 movie theaters and a great Boardwalk. I am also thrilled that Governor Christie and President Obama are touring the improvements together. While I do not agree with many of the Presidents programs, I do …   more ›

Officials Tag Baby Falcons Living on GWB

Young birds expected to take flight within weeks

Four peregrine falcon chicks recently hatched on the George Washington Bridge were tagged with identifying bands Tuesday, according to reports.  The birds hatched about three weeks ago six feet below the bridge's lower level, CBS-2 reported. Peregrine falcons nest in high places most like cliffs, including buildings and bridges around New York City.  "I come in when they're three months old and put identification tags on the young on both legs. These identification tags will stay on for their lifetime, and it gives us a wealth of biological information," NYC Department of Environmental Protection biologist Chris Nadareski told NY1.  Port Authority bridge crews regularly check a special nesting box and assisted DEP experts tag the birds. …

River Edge Mayor and Council Consider Sidewalk Dining

Outdoor dining would be permissible from April through November.

The governing body of River Edge is considering the approval of an outdoor dining ordinance allowing restaurants to set up tables outside during the warmer months so that patrons can enjoy the fresh air. Introduced by Councilwoman Kathleen Murphy, the ordinance would include a permit for outside dining, which council seemed to agree would be an annual renewable charge of approximately $200, The ordinance would also carry a stipulation that outdoor dining would be confined to run between April 15 through Nov. 30. The council suggested adding that all tables and chairs not tethered be moved inside after the restaurant has closed every night. Another stipulation is that no outdoor dining be permitted near a parking lot or driveway unless a …

Ridgewood's Andy Maguire Looks Poised to Take on Scott Garrett

Former Congressman has filed paperwork to run against the Republican incumbent.

It sure seems like former Congressman Andy Maguire is looking to reclaim his old seat. The Democrat from Ridgewood is making the rounds and raising a warchest to take on well-funded, name-brand conservative incumbent, Scott Garrett. While Maguire – who was a congressman from 1974-1980 before Marge Roukema ousted him – claims the campaign is still "exploratory" at this point, his spokesman told northjersey.com that the 5th district seat is "certainly winnable." Maguire, 75, has been at party events in recent months, most recently introducing two Democratic Glen Rock council candidates. Politickernj.com reported he has filed the paperwork to take on Garrett in 2014. While the 5th district still favors Republicans, new voting lines now bring …

Well, I wouldn't get educated by the name-calling, cutesy hostility. People who support Mr. Garrett could help his cause by outlining his votes and stands on issues, or at least be proud of themselves for their knowledge.   more ›

Upgrades to Substation Coming this Fall, PSE&G Says

No interruption of service to customers, officials report.

As part of their massive $3.9 billion, 10-year proposed infrastructure plan, called "Energy Strong," PSE&G will be running underground transformer lines from the New Milford substation to the River Edge Swim Club, officials reported at the meeting of the River Edge Mayor and Council Monday evening. The plan, prompted by the effects of Superstorm Sandy that left residents in River Edge, Oradell and New Milford without power and gas for 10 days, includes raising, relocating or protecting all switching and substations affected by recent storms as well as those in newly designated flood zones, moving 20 miles of overhead electric distribution lines underground, reinforcing overhead power lines to withstand sustained 65 mph winds, replacing and…

Oradell Attorney to Push for New Application in Proposed Development, and More This Week

The state of the United Water property application for development will be challenged by Oradell's attorney this week.

Louis Flora, the attorney representing Oradell in the New Milford Zoning Board hearings of the proposed development of the United Water Property, is expected to challenge the application at the special meeting of the Zoning Board on Thursday. This meeting comes on the heels of the dramatic ending of last week's meeting when counsel for the developer announced that they had entered into a conceptual agreement with the New Milford Board of Education to donate three-acres of property, along with a 'sizable' donation, for a 'field of dreams.' Opposing counsel plans to petition the Board to consider this a new application, rather than an amendment to the existing application. Flora said that because the land will now have a different use, …

Yet-to-Open Westwood Hospital Already Has Expansion Aims

HUMC-Pascack Valley CEO Chad Melton wants the hospital to increase bed counts within the next few years, according to northjersey.com. Melton said he doesn't think Bergen competitors will "lose volume" as a result.

With Valley Hospital struggling to modernize its own facilities through a controversial expansion project, a major competitor announced it too has visions of expansion – and it's not even open for business yet. According to a Sunday report on northjersey.com, Hackensack University Medical Center at Pascack Valley is optimistic its new facility will drum up enough business to quickly expand. Pascack Valley Hospital declared bankrupcy in 2007 and has been dormant since. “If we truly have the volume here and the support we think, within the next three years we’ll be looking to add inpatient rooms,” Chad Melton, chief executive of the 128-bed hospital, told the news website. HUMC-Pascack Valley, scheduled to open June 1, is the first for-…
