Organizer denies political action committee sought to hide contributions
A political action committee financed largely by contractors doing business in Bergen County paid for an event celebrating the county Democratic party's election night victory last November in Hasbrouck Heights, the Star-Ledger reported Wednesday. The PAC that covered the $10,033.54 event, the New Leadership Council of New Jersey, was created by Daniel Ortega, a former Democratic party official under ex-chairman Joe Ferriero. The former party chair was indicted on mail fraud charges, but his conviction was later overturned. Ortega said the PAC was not seeking to hide contributions, according to the report. New Jersey law allows contributors who donate less than $300 to remain anonymous.
A published report Sunday revealed New Jersey’s current campaign donation system needs to be revised after it was disclosed politicians can receive more money while still keeping the names of their donors secret — as long as the contributions are less than $300. The NJ.com report said most states allow campaigns to keep only those donors who give $100, $50 or less private, but Garden State politicians don’t have to report any information about people who contribute less than $300. The report said because of the state’s secretive laws, candidates were able to hide about $12 million out of the $100 million donated. River Edge and Oradell council candidates filed their petitions to run in the June primary.
For the third straight year, Oradell's incumbent Republican council members will face an uncontested race as the Democratic party did not put forth any candidates for the June primary. In River Edge, only one Democrat filed to challenge two sitting councilmen. All candidates filed their petitions prior to the 4 p.m. deadline Monday for the June 4 primary election. River Edge Democrat Chairwoman Ellen Busteed is the lone candidate to face incumbent Councilmen Alphonse Bartelloni and Edward Mignone this fall. Busteed, who sits on the borough Planning Board and is a member of the Bergen County League of Women Voters, is a former marketing professional. Oradell's Fernando Alonso will challenge Sen. Bob Gordon in the 38th District Senate race this fall
After a previous tie vote, Oradell's Fernando Alonso was selected as the Bergen County Republican choice to challenge Sen. Bob Gordon (D-38) in the November senate race. The Oradell lawyer defeated former county Freeholder John Driscoll of Paramus by a slim margin with the final results showing Alonso with 143 to Driscoll's 130, according to a report on northjersey.com. The second vote, which was held on Thursday, came about after both men tied at 120 votes each on March 7. For two Bergen County politicians, the road to challenge District-38 Sen. Bob Gordon has been made a little longer after this week's County Republican convention resulted in a tie. Fernando Alonso of Oradell and former Freeholder John Driscoll of Paramus each received 120 votes according to a northjersey.com report. The Bergen County Clerk's Office has released the official Nov. 6 election results
Official election results from the Bergen County Clerk's Office show no change in the outcome of the Nov. 6 local election where voters ousted Council President Paul Cordts for council and voted in a newcomer to the Regional Board of Education. River Edge also approved the Open Space Referendum by a small margin. According to official results Vito Acquafredda remained at the top in River Edge taking in 36 percent of the vote with incumbent Anthony Cappola picking up 32 percent. Cordts followed in with 31 percent.
