The teens spent the night into the early morning hours in their cardboard homes as a way to understand the plight of those that are homeless. The event is held rain or shine.
River Edge residents Alex Zhu and Brian Gu, students at the Bergen County Academies, have been named as semifinalists for the 2011 U.S. Physics Team. They were chosen from among 3,000 students nationwide who participated in an exam that comprises the first phase of the U.S. Physics Team selection process. The results of a second exam will determine the selection of the twenty-member U.S. Team that will travel to the University of Maryland–College Park in May for the U.S. Physics Training Camp. On March 24, the Webelos II’s from Oradell Cub Scout Pack 136 presented the American Flag and stand to the Oradell Public Library’s Junior Room as a way of saying thank you. Over the past five years the scouts have used the library for their meetings. As they prepare to cross over to Boy Scouts, they wanted to show their appreciation by giving back to inspire future scouts and others. The American Flag a symbol for our country was chosen by the scouts in hopes that all are reminded of the importance of citizenship and duty to our country. At the recent St. Joseph School Science Fair several sixth graders took home prizes as they were judged by faculty from surrounding parochial schools. Taking home first place was Gian Paolo Pernicone; second place to Billy McKee and third place to Ray Gayam. Katie O'Toole, Micaela Maron and Julian Tallier each were named honorable mention winners. The students spent four months working on their projects all while learning the scientific method. Starting with a question, students then gathered information before forming a hypothesis. Odyssey of the Mind is an international creative problem solving competition which encourages students in grades K-12 to apply their skills and imagination to solve problems involving literary classics, mechanics, balsa structures and much more. Following their recent trip to ECC's The Rumble National Cheerleading competition, the River Dell Hawks' cheerleading squad will be hitting primetime television this week. For that reason, the entire squad is this week's Whiz Kid. Approximately 5,000 young women receive their Girl Scout Gold Award each year. That's an average of 5.4% of the eligible registered Girl Scouts in grades 10-12; but in Oradell five young women earned the highest award in Girl Scouts this year. This week's Whiz Kids are Gabriella Belthoff, Ashley Feigenson, Megan Gallow, Carolyn Rauch and Caitlin Powers who spent months working on their Gold Projects to give back to the community. Troop 36 Boy Scout and Oradell resident, Craig Marulis, takes a moment to organize a closet at Gilda’s Club NNJ as part of his month-long final Eagle Scout Leadership Service Project to raise awareness for the not-for-profit cancer support organization. As part of his final project, Marulis collected in-kind donations through a town-wide supply drive to benefit Gilda’s Club. He organized his fellow troops and went door-to- door to deliver an itemized “wish list” from Gilda’s Club, along with information about the clubhouse. David Finn is not like just any 18-year-old student at River Dell. He has dedicated his life to living life to the fullest and to learning as much as possible. Finn has also accomplished something few other River Dell students have done - beat Superintendent Patrick Fletcher at chess. Finn struggles with multiple handicaps and has no formal speech, but according to his Humanities teacher Carolyn Krzastek, he has become her hero because her perseveres.
