A casting director sounded the call yesterday for local families interested in trying out for a TLC reality show about home design. The River Dell Golden Hawks and Lady Hawks each suffered through defeat yesterday evening as they varsity basketball squads took on Pascack Valley. Bergen Catholic came up one point shy of knocking off the Hackensack Comets. The Golden Hawks were able to keep pace with the Indians for the first three quarters, but could not withstand the final quarter as River Dell fell, 47-45. Anytime the Bergen Catholic Crusaders and Don Bosco Ironmen met in athletic competition, spectators are guaranteed a good match-up. Earlier this month, the two schools clashed in Oradell for their regular season wrestling match, with BC decimating Bosco, 43-22. Last night, the two schools met once again but this time in the opening round of the North Non-Public A state tournament. Gilda's Club in Hackensack is seeking local comedians, amateur or professional, for their 12th annual "Laugh-Off" in honor of Gilda Radner, the late Saturday Night Live performer for whom the organization is named. Pennsylvania native Herb Pope has overcome a lot to get to the hardwood floor at Seton Hall University. The junior 6'8" forward for the Pirates has survived bullet wounds, fathered a child, transferred colleges, criticism and slurs after committing a dirty foul in front of television cameras, and the discovery of a birth defect to his heart. The Bergen County Youth Police Academy is opening its doors again for a new class in the summer of 2011. The program is accepting applications now through May 6 from students entering grades 9-12 who live in Bergen County. The two week program is being held at the Bergen County Law and Public Safety Institute in Mahwah from June 27 to July 8. The camp will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is free of charge to participants. The No. 7 River Dell Lady Hawks and No. 9 Bergen Catholic Crusaders both move onto the second round of the County Tournaments following their opening round wins this past weekend. Danny Lynch (103) started things off with an 11-0 manual defeat over Byran Rottingen. DJ Tirelli (112) and Brendan Campbell (119) picked up back-to-back wins as well. Two out of the three RiverDell area high school basketball teams have picked up a spot in their respective County Tournaments. The River Dell Lady Hawks (12-1) are seeded 7th in the 2011 Bergen County Girls Basketball Championships while the Bergen Catholic Crusaders (9-6) are seeded 9th in the 55th Oscar F. The NJDOT Division of Local Aid and Economic Development recently announced the Municipal Aid Fiscal Year 2010 grant recipients. In the municipal aid program, funds are appropriated by the Legislature for municipalities in each county toward road improvement projects such as resurfacing, rehabilitation or reconstruction and signalization. Both Oradell and River Edge will each be awarded $200,000 in grant funding toward road repairs. Last night, both River Dell basketball squads hit the court hard against the Indian Hills Braves, but only the Lady Hawks walked away with a win. The 12-1 Lady Hawks flew over the Lady Braves (5-9) hitting double digits again and again. Yesterday evening the River Dell/Westwood Golden Hawks swim team hit the water at Bergen Community College as they took on longtime rival Pascack Valley. And once against the girls' squad came up with a huge win, beating the Indians by a 20-point margin, 94.5 to 75.5. The boys team kept it close before falling 91 to 79. The Girls' squad was led by Hayley Degnan, Maddy Toohey, Eilish Devine, and Jacqueline White. The River Dell Golden Hawks survived on the mat yesterday as they defeated Ridgefield Park, 57-19 and then Hasbrouck Heights/Wood-Ridge Aviators, 48-23. Both the River Dell Golden Hawks and Lady Hawks came up big last night against the Dwight Morrow Maroon Raiders. Prior to the change to the Big North, both River Dell and Dwight Morrow competed against one another in the BCSL American league, but are now split into different divisions. In the Golden Hawks game, River Dell got off to their usual slow start as the team took their time in testing the Raiders while in Oradell. In Gordon Conference play, the Bergen Catholic Crusaders fell 8-2 to the Christian Brother Academy Colts yesterday evening. BC continued to see strong play from senior captain Adam Apidopoulos, who netted two goals, but could not overcome the powerful Colts offense. Coming off their first league win of the season, the River Dell/Westwood Golden Hawks ran into their tough foe, the Pascack Valley Indians for the third time this season. In prior matches, the Indians have shut out the Hawks and last night was no different, but this time the final score was not a complete blow out.
