Pixie is a domestic short hair, black and white, young female cat. Sweet as pie and adorable as ever, Pixie came to the shelter as a stray. This 7-month old is very social and irresistible. Full of life and very active, adopters will have a blast with this playful kitty. With patches of white fur underneath her coat of black, this is one unique looking feline. Pixie has tested positive for Feline Aids and can go to a home with other FIV Positive cats or a home with no other cats.

The Bergen County Animal Shelter, located in Teterboro, always has many animals who are looking for a great home. Each week Patch highlights the featured pets of the week. Dapple is a medium size female pit bull terrier whose soulful eyes will quickly reel you in. Once you take her out, she is all for walking and exploring the world as she is one curious little pooch. She has unfortunately, been at the shelter for more than 3 months, too long to live in a kennel. Although she is an adventurous girl, owners must be firm and set rules/routines in the household so she doesn't take total control over the family members. Since her stay here, she has definitely broken out of her shell and loves to show and receive affection.

Weizal, a 13-year old female black cat, was surrendered to the shelter and the staff is doing its best to keep her and her sister Cat comfortable. Because they grew up together, the shelter is looking for a home that would be delighted to take them as a pair. They quite like the company of their human friends and although they are nervous, they still enjoy the attention they've been given so far.

This loving 97-pound, 7 year old male Rottweiler named JoJo came to the shelter when his owner surrendered him because he had to move and couldn’t take him along. JoJo deserves a loving and understanding home at his tender age. Although he is not a golden oldie, he is an older adult, and with any middle-aged dog comes more frequent vet visits but don’t let them stop you from meeting this handsome fellow. He is smart and energetic and will need plenty of mental and physical stimulation, ranging from long walks to obedience training. He will need a confident leader to provide him with a strong and stable routine. Because he can be quite intimidating to young children, the shelter seeks a home without young children.

Ruby is a 3 legged calico cat, about 3 to 4-years old. A Good Samaritan brought to the Oradell Animal Hospital with a serious injury to one of her rear legs. Thanks to the generosity of the FOCAS Angel Fund, her leg was amputated and she's doing very well now. She is a sweet cat, friendly with people and really seems to enjoy the warm cage with a soft bed at the shelter. Ruby has a mostly white body and colored tail.

Lydia is a sweet little 6-month old female domestic, medium hair, black and white cat. She happens to be extra special and unique because she is a polydactyl cat with six toes on her front paws. Also she has a brother Charlie who she loves to cuddle with and sleep with. The two were in a foster home together for the past three months and the shelters hopes to find a home that will take both of them since they are so close. The shelter is offering “adopt one kitten, get the second at no charge.” Lydia has gorgeous long fur and looks like a little fluff ball. She can be very shy and timid and may need a bit of time to warm up but once she does she will settle in your lap and purr herself to sleep. She is very playful too and loves to chase balls and cat toys. She gets along well with other cats too.
Lydia is up to date with shots and will be spayed & microchipped before leaving our shelter.

Full of life and full of gumption, Babe Ruth is pretty as can be. This female Pit Bull Terrier takes her walks seriously and will need a firm and confident leader who can provide her with proper guidance and training. Babe Ruth will make a wonderful companion, she just needs to be taught some basic obedience, manners and loose leash training. Because she is young, there is no doubt she will learn fairly quickly, but it will take a lot of patience and a lot of determination. A little on the confident side, Babe Ruth is pretty sure of herself and therefore will need a family who can give her a balanced lifestyle, where she is apart of the family and not in charge of it.

Diamond is a social butterfly who will have you at hello. Tail wagging, wiggly body and a certain sparkle in her eye, this 7-year old lady knows the tricks of her trade. As an owner surrender, this 79 pond dog doesn't let that bring her down. Although she may be a couple pounds overweight, she has a ton of life and spirit left. She is waiting for a family that can help her become a more healthy, vigorous companion. Plenty of exercise will do the trick. Owners should practice loose leash training so she can actually take pleasure in this bonding experience. The shelter says she came in with two other canine siblings and therefore should do well in a home with other dogs.

Bumper is a one-year old rowdy puppy who is sure to make a great companion for a very active and experienced family. Bumper came to the shelter when his owners were moving and couldn't take him along. Nothing seems to rain on this happy pups parade, not even a nice long bath. Because he is so cheerful, he tends to take all that energy and release it on people he wants to meet. Bumper can be a bit inappropriate when it comes to introducing himself to strangers. Although it is not aggressive at all, he may be too rough with young children. The shelter seeks owners who are knowledgeable of his breed and can handle his exuberant energy level. Doggie obedience classes are recommend along with long walks, hikes, runs and fetches in the yard which are great ways to knock him out by nightfall.

Minnie is a medium size, female domestic short hair gray cat who came to the shelter with another cat when her owner sadly, decided she no longer wanted them any longer. Minnie is a little shy at first but does warm up when she is given one on one attention and then loves to be pet and held. This sweet, petite girl has a beautiful face and gorgeous markings. She is about 4 years old, up to date with shots and has tested negative for Feline Aids and Feline Leukemia. She will get a microchip before leaving our shelter.

Alfalfa is a medium size, adult, male lop eared rabbit available for adoption. He came into the shelter as a stray. Rabbits can make great pets the shelter says recommending the use of rabbits.org as a source for medical, behavioral and general information about raising rabbits.

Bailey, is a sweet 8 year-old Beagle who came to the shelter because his owners no longer had time for him. The staff members are sure that with daily walks and socialization he will be just fine. Since he is a Beagle he will need plenty of mental stimulation to keep his nose and mind occupied. Although he does follow his nose like a true hound he manages to be social. He interacts with strangers and enjoys the interaction from his 2-legged friends. Bailey will make a great companion for someone who understands his needs and will be happy to meet them.

Homer is a 10 month old “pup” Labrador Retriever who would make a great companion for a very active and caring family. He will need a lot of guidance and strong leadership. The shelter says he is one smart dog that will learn fairly quickly. They advise releasing a ton of energy before training so he can concentrate on instruction better. Because he tends to react to situations before using his noggin the shelter recommends a family without children. Once he begins to use his thought process he will make a more responsive, respectful family member.

Chaz, is a young medium-sized Jack Russell terrier who came to the shelter as a stray. He is about 1-years old but is still very much a puppy. He is a ball of energy who will you on a ride and leave you breathless by the end of the day. This active young man will be perfect for a family of firm leaders who can provide him with the training and guidance he needs to grow into a calm, mature dog. Because he is full of exuberance he will need to be taught manners and how to respect his handlers. He takes belongings a bit too seriously therefore the shelter recommends a home without children. Owners should consult a trainer and begin a behavior modification route with his guarding issues which the shelter staff believes he can overcome.

Mason is a large, pit bull terrier who is easy-going, and always is constantly wagging tail. This big 8 year old was turned in because he was too strong for his owner. Basic obedience should solve the problem and keep Mason from pulling you around. While not overly affectionate, it's obvious he enjoys being near people and being petted. A potential adopter should have some basic dog ownership experience, preferably with bully breeds and adequate space for a large dog. Since Mason has been at the shelter he is much easier to walk as the staff and volunteers have been working with him. He would love a forever home for the holidays.

RBARI Asking Locals To 'Pause for Paws'

The rescue dogs and cats at the Ramapo Bergen Animal Refuge, Inc. and Pascack Valley Meals On Wheels programs are in need of essential supplies. So, the organizations are asking residents to ‘Pause for Paws’ during a pet supply drive happening December 15 through January 31. According to a flier sent out by the agencies, items needed include: wet or dry food in original, sealed containers, dog and cat treats, toys, collars, and brushes, dog leashes and crates, cat carriers, scrating posts, litter boxes and scoops, general cleaning supplies, bedding, blankets, towels, printer paper, envelopes …

Chip, a 4.5 year old terrier, possible Grey Hound mix, will have you smiling from ear to ear. Even though his owners were moving and couldn't take him along, Chip is still in the best of moods. Unfortunately, he has been at the shelter for more than three months, much too long to live in a kennel. Maybe he's feeling a little too good, especially if he can catapult himself out of the kennel when it's open. That is something owners will have to keep an eye on when he is brought home. If he won't jump over the fence, he may be a door dasher, so some obedience training will do him some good. This 71lb. superstar is all about the people and loves to place himself near others where he can get all the attention. Owners will have to make sure this behavior doesn't escalate into neediness, but it's all harmless at this point. Continued socialization is recommended since he is quite the social butterfly at the shelter. Along with socialization, Chip will need plenty of exercise and obedience training so he can be a better behaved companion in and out of the home.

Lovebug is a five-year old domestic short hair, gray and white adult cat. Another victim of the economy, Lovebug came to shelter when her owners lost their home to foreclosure. She has lived with children, dogs and other cats and is now seeking her forever home. Her name says it all.

Skippy, a five year old male, Beagle, is a social and happy gentleman, the shelter says. True to his breed, he is a typical scent hound and will use his nose every chance he gets. But once his investigating is complete, he will gladly join his human companions in some one-on-one time. The shelter says he enjoys affection and previous owners say he’s a great companion. His last owner took ill and was unable to care for him. Sadly, he had been at the shelter one before and now he seeks a permanent home.

Pepper, is a medium sized young adult female Staffordshire terrier who will leave you grinning from ear to ear. The shelter says Pepper’s smile is contagious and her lovable personality will have one begging for more. She would make an active family very happy and would adore her new owners for giving her enough energy release throughout the day so she could sleep soundly at night. Some basic obedience and leash training would not be harmful to Pepper. Also she should be taught some traditional manners when it comes to playtime as she needs to learn how to share and return her toys without developing any guarding issues. Pepper is full of life and vigor, and she is looking for a household that will not only treat her as one of their own, but who will take her for all that she is.
