Commuters can now receive train schedule information via text message. NJ Transit has partnered with Long Island text engine company CooCoo. Commuters can text a station-to-station request to 266266 (CooCoo) and receive a text back with the next scheduled trains as menu options. Then, commuters can text back the letter corresponding to the train they'd like, and CooCoo will respond with fares and travel times. Commuters can also request specific times in their texts. The Christie administration announced late last month that 10 transportation projects in Bergen County are scheduled to advance with $76.4 million from the $3.5 billion Transportation Capital Program. The bulk of the money, $40.8 million, goes toward a project to replace the Route 3 bridge over the Passaic River. The the New Jersey Department of Transportation has already started work to rehabilitate the Route 3 bridge over the Hackensack River. The New Jersey Department of Transportation has started work to replace the Route 17 northbound bridge over Route 80 in Hackensack and Hasbrouck Heights, according to a statement from the department. The work started last week when the Department of Transportation contractor shifted both Route 17 northbound lanes to the right, into the shoulder. The department said the work would be completed in stages, so two lanes will stay open during daytime and peak hours. Further stages will require more traffic pattern changes, including long-term shoulder closures on Route 80. As the contractor …

Commuters traveling northbound on Route 17 in Hackensack may experience delays as the Department of Transportation works on the South Summit Avenue bridge deck. The construction, which started Friday, is expected to require long-term closures to the ramp from Route 17 northbound to South Summit Avenue. The New Jersey Department of Transportation started construction to rehabilitate the Route 3 bridges over the Hackensack River Friday. The bridges link Bergen County to the west to the Lincoln Tunnel to the west. About 130,000 motorists use the bridges daily. On or about March 4, NJDOT will convert the auxiliary lane from the Meadowlands Parkway to Route 3 westbound into a full travel lane. NJ Transit announced a pair of initiatives last week intended to give customers real-time information on trains and buses. NJ Transit entered into a contract Tuesday to install Smart Bus technology on all its bus. The technology will allow customers to receive bus location and arrival information on their web-enabled devices. NJ Transit Executive Director James Weinstein said the Smart Bus technology could lead to signs that display when the next bus would arrive, and web tools like maps displaying where buses are on their routes. Thanks to more than $78 million in grants from the state Department of Transportation, commuters can look forward to smoother rides on local roads. Another chapter of the Access to the Region's Core saga unfolded this week when the state refused the Federal Transit Administration's demand for $271 million in funding for the canceled project. Chris Christie canceled the ARC project in October, citing cost overruns. Now the FTA wants the money it invested into the project back.
