New Jersey's Department of Environmental Protection is advising municipal officials to clear storm drains to reduce the risk of street flooding as the snow begins to melt. Weather forecasts have temperatures climbing into the 40s this weekend, with the possibility of rain. "Right now, the predictions do not point to any major flooding, but we are working closely with all of our state and local partners and the National Weather Service to monitor the situation. We want to keep local officials armed with good information," DEP Commissioner Bob Martin said in a statement. "The rate of melting …

After approximately 20 inches of snow fell on the two boroughs from Sunday into Monday, DPW employees in River Edge and Oradell are still clearing the local side streets. Main roads such as Kinderkamack Road, Midland Avenue and parts of Oradell Avenue were cleaned by the County during the snow storm. While snow plowing is still taking place in the two boroughs, residents are reminded by police departments to park their vehicles in a driveway and not on the road. Also those residents with fire hydrants near their property need to shovel out the hydrant as well. Borough Hall in each town has …
A blizzard warning has been canceled but not until the fierce storm pelted Bergen County with whipping wind and stinging snow for most of Sunday, leaving behind at least 29 inches in some areas and paralyzing the tri-state area. The National Weather Service issued a bleak outlook about travel late Sunday, saying that unsafe driving conditions were likely into Monday and that the storm had the potential to knock out power, down tree limbs and tear off Christmas decorations. Although the blizzard warning was canceled, a winter weather advisory was issued until midnight Monday.  The advisory …
DPW employees were hard at work early this morning to plow the snow off the main roads in River Edge and Oradell. As of 10pm last night, each borough saw approximately 10 inches of snow fall. A winter weather advisory for the area remains in effect until midnight tonight and already the decision has been made in Oradell that Borough Hall will remain closed until tomorrow. The River Edge Borough Hall will also remain closed during the day. The scheduled River Edge Council work session and Sine Die meeting may be held tonight, but no decision has been made as of 12pm this afternoon. All …
The blizzard has finally begun to lift and residents can dig out their cars and homes this morning. The area had over a foot of snow fall between yesterday and early this morning. Were you one of the brave outside previously? Or maybe you took a photo from the safety of your home. Upload your blizzard photos to this gallery or email them to eamon.harbord@patch.com and show off either how you spent the blizzard at home or maybe just how the two towns were blanketed by snow.
Under a law that went into effect in October, New Jersey drivers now face fines for failing to clean snow and ice off their cars. In the past, drivers would only be fined if snow and ice fell off their vehicle and caused damage or injury. Now motorists will be expected to clean snow and ice off before hitting the road or face a fine of $25 to $75. The fines for damage or injury range from $200 to $1,000, or $500 to $1,500 for commercial drivers.
The River Edge Police Department and Oradell Office of Emergency Management have been notifying residents through NIXLE all morning to stay inside. The two boroughs may see up to a foot of snow during today's blizzard watch. While the River Edge and Oradell DPW snow plows were out earlier, residents are still encouraged to move their vehicles into their driveways and off the roads. REPD Lt. Richard Curran sent out the following message through NIXLE, "Snow accumulations are expected to reach 12" - 18" inches. Please refrain from parking vehicles in the street to help with snow removal." Derek…
New Jersey Transit says it's taking steps to minimize delays as the winter's first storm hits northern New Jersey. To give customers additional travel options during the storm, NJ Transit will offer full systemwide cross-honoring starting at noon Sunday and continuing all day on Monday, Dec. 27, enabling NJ Transit customers to use their tickets or passes on alternate travel modes–rail, bus or light rail. A customer who normally takes the bus from a New Jersey location into the Port Authority Bus Terminal could instead take the train to New York Penn Station, the agency said by way of example…
