Young Women Team Together for the Children of Haiti

River Dell senior Amanda Walker and New Milford alumni Alexa DeMiglio are organizing a benefit event for the children of Haiti

Having spent the helping the Wings of Refuge Children's Home get up and running, New Milford resident Alexa DeMiglio recently journeyed back to Haiti with friend and River Dell senior Amanda Walker.

The duo traveled together through Powerhouse Christian Church in Wyckoff for Walker's first trip. DeMiglio has gone six times prior (and is leaving for her seventh trip on March 25). With 21 children currently housed at Wings of Refuge, both young women have turned their attention to helping raise funds so that Haitian Pastor Roger Wilson Charles, can expand the facility.

On April 20, 7-11pm community members from around the County will be able to attend a benefit concert at Conlon Hall in Bergenfield and hear The Nerds and Shaved Ham perform. Tickets are $50 per person and advanced purchase is required.

"Basically, these 21 children at Wings of Refuge (WOR) which opened this past May are Haiti's future and hope," Walker and DeMiglio said. "They have been given a second chance and a place to call home. It is a chance for them to learn how to make change and to keep the hope up for Haiti's future. Even though their families didn't have enough to provide and care for them, we encourage their parents and family to come and visit for their birthdays and anytime they would like. Many of the children in WOR are actually siblings."

During the event, a video will be playing of the children at Wings of Refuge that DeMiglio will film this month. Attendees will be given the opportunity to experience a few minutes of what life is like at Wings of Refuge and meet the children that live there. The entire night is BYO, whether its food, soft drinks or cocktails. Gift Baskets, raffles, and much more will also be available.

"The youngest child there is 7 months old and the oldest is 10 years old," Walker said. "In January, we took all 21 children out to dinner at a restaurant. It was the second time they had been and they were all so well behaved. They also just recently took their first trip to the beach."

Wings of Refuge is currently located in Petionville, Haiti, approximately 15 minutes from Port-au-Prince.

All ticket proceeds go to WOR Children's Home in Haiti, an orphanage started by Pastor Roger Wilson Charles. WOR is providing a safe haven for the disadvantaged children living in Haiti.  Join us for this memorable night because your ticket counts towards improving the lives of the children.
