Indoor Track has Close Finishes in Big North Meet

A weekly recap of the Golden Hawks and Crusaders athletics

With a one point difference, the results of the Big North Patriot girls indoor track competition all came down to Caroly Edler of Mahwah - if she cleared the pole vault, the title would go to Ramsey, if not it would be claimed by the Lady Hawks. Edler, who cleared a North Jersey best of 11 feet gave the Rams their first Patriot Division, 112-111 over River Dell at the Armory Center in Manhattan. Melissa Gibbons came in third in the 55m in 7.7 seconds followed by Jamie Woods second place finish in the 55HH. Paige Fernandez and Emily Croonquist flew to first in the 1000m and 1600m respectively. Fernandez additionally placed hird in the triple jump. Laura Oh threw the shot put to second and Steph Zaccaria tied with Mahwah's Gena Pickett in the high jump for second place. Bridget Brindley took second in the pole vault with the relay teams (4x400 and 4x800) taking back-to-back second place finishes.

River Dell boys track took third in the Patriot Division championship with 80 behind eventual winner Ramsey (121) and Indian Hills (95). Chris Bang ran the 55m in 6.9 for a third place finish with Craig Marulis also picking up third place in the 600m in 1:25.3. Matt Koh and Austin Berninger brought home the 1-2 spots in the shot put and Brandon Jurasin high jumped his way to second place. The 4x400 relay came in third.

Kate Brock helped key the six-game win­ning streak that revived the Lady Hawks on the court. In three games last week, she averaged 17 points, 10.6 rebounds, 2.6 steals and 5.3 blocks. On Tuesday night, Brock (25 points) decimated a struggling Indian Hills squad, 62-29, as the Lady Braves were limited to single digits in each quarter. Kayla McGovern came in with 14 points.

Bergen Catholic wrestling coach Dave Bell earned his 200th career vic­tory with a 48-12 victory over of Massachu­setts on Jan. 14. He has a 203-82 career record in 14 seasons but his Crusaders boosted his reconrd to 204-82 with a 53-12 decision over Passaic Tech. Tyler Casamenti, Matthew Rose, Troy Schaafsma, JP Ascolese, Michael Maye, Connor Melde, Matt Mangini, Michael Kruklinski, Lukas Iorio, Christian Jenco and Carmine Goldsack rode out their opponents to victory.

To wrap up the regular swimming season, the RiverDell/Westwood boys dropped a tight race with Indian Hills 90-80 while the girls picked up a 106-64 win over the Braves. Winning their heats in first place were: Brian Seeber (200 free), Albert Figueiredo (50 free, 100 back), Liam Oberlander (100 fly, 100 free), Peter Mari (100 breast), the 200 and 400 boys relay teams (Matt Starace, Ceeber, Figueiredo, Oberlander), Hayley Degnan (200 free), Elizabeth Figueiredo (50 free), Gabby Denicola (100 fly), Eilish Devine (100 and 500 free), Emily Reynolds (100 back), 200 girls relay (Figueiredo, Laurel Passaretti, Mandy Blute, Devine) and 400 girls relay (Denicola, Reynolds, Degnan, Devine).

Golden Hawks wrestlers moved one step closer to securing a Patriot Division league title when they ousted Pascack Valley, 33-29. Nick Baranello, Lenny Smith, DJ Tirelli, John McLaughlin, Brendan Campbell, and Cenzo Cariddi were able to pin their way for a win.

Holding on to a three point lead from the third period, Paramus Catholic Paladins knocked off their Rt. 17 rivals Bergen Catholic on the court this week. Chuck Wingate (11) and Nadi Beciri (10) were the only Crusaders to hit double digits as a stingy PC defense limited the bulk of the team to a few points each.

BC bowling earned a 5-2 win over DePaul Catholic as Charles Long rolled high games of 243 and 203 followed by Freddy Dressel's 219 and Simon Lezaja's 206.

Running at the Armory Track Center for the Bergen County Relays, the Crusaders struggled in the large schools category coming in at the back of the pack. The 4x800 relay team finished in fifth place in 8:49.4 and fourth in the shot put
