Fresh and Fancy Farms Preserves a New Milford Tradition

An Oradell family is now growing crops in New Milford.

The Klinger family started farming in New Milford in 1913. Bill and Sharon Klinger took over the farm from Mr. Klinger's parents half a century later. They grew flowers there until Mr. Klinger passed away. Mrs. Klinger also kept a ceramics studio on the farm.

After Mr. Klinger's passing, Mrs. Klinger found it too difficult to maintain the farm on her own. The Low family came in to pick up the baton. They work with Mrs. Klinger to preserve this farming legacy.

The Low family lives in Oradell and commutes to New Milford to work on their farm. Kerry Low, Don Low, and their children have made some modifications, but have kept the farming tradition alive. The farm reopened on Mother's Day in 2011 as Fresh and Fancy Farms.

Some of the greenhouses were removed and replaced with rows of vegetables planted directly into the ground. Fresh and Fancy Farms now offers a mixture of produce, flowers, and shrubbery for sale. If a food license is approved, patrons will be able to purchase homemade delicacies there.

Mr. Low brought decades of experience as a commercial landscaper to the endeavor, and Mrs. Klinger is teaching the Lows the details of growing flowers. They read up on the best methods for growing fruits and vegetables. Now they want to share that knowledge with others.

Fresh and Fancy Farms may host classes on farming in the near future. Kerry Low encourages anyone interested in collaborating on these projects to contact the farm. For more details and updates, check out the Fresh and Fancy Farms website.
