Dog Park Underway; Opening Set for Late Fall

An off-leash dog park at Van Saun Park is on the way late autumn

As the days get shorter and the temperatures cool down, Bergen County's canines and their owners are counting down until the under construction Van Saun Park dog park opens for use. Work on leveling the ground began in mid-September and work is expected to be completed by late fall.

The $50,000 County-funded project includes fencing and running a water line to provide refreshment for the canine customers, in a secluded spot near Parking Lot 4 in Area E which is not far from the S.O.S. Gardens and Continental Avenue entrance in River Edge. There is a possiblity for benches for owners to sit while their dogs run around.

The dog run should be ready by late fall as the County had to complete work on the renovated Ridgewood Dog Park first. The Paramus location will have a stone dust surface, separate areas for small and large animals and a poop-bag dispenser, according to a report on NorthJersey.com.

Work to get the bark park created began with an online petition that garnered 230 signatures from residents not only in River Edge but also in nearby towns as well. The governing bodies in Oradell, Paramus and New Milford along with River Edge approved resolutions in support of the Van Saun dog park as it would allow not only owners a place to socialize but promote responsible pet ownership and the enforcement of dog-control laws.

Facebook group for residents to discuss where they currently bring their dogs to as well as updates on the Van Saun project was created to keep any interested dog owners up to date.
